Gutter Installation Service

Gutters are an important part of any home’s exterior, and professional gutter installation service can help you create the system that best fits your needs. They can also find and fix issues with your roof that may require additional work or materials.

Depending on your local building codes, a licensed and bonded contractor should be able to install or repair gutters. They should also be able to provide proof of insurance.

The cost of installing gutters will depend on the type of gutter you choose, as well as whether or not you need to add additional reinforcements or specialty fittings. Labor prices can vary by as much as $1-$7 per linear foot. You can also expect to pay more if your house is two stories or steeper, if your roof has many corners, or if you have unusual gutter materials.

To start the job, make sure that you have the necessary tools for the project. Several power tools, including a miter saw, are available for rent from most home improvement stores. You should purchase 10% to 15% more than you think you’ll need to complete the project successfully.

Measure and cut the length of guttering you need for your project. Be sure to account for any necessary fittings, such as couplers and downspouts, that will connect the gutter to the eaves of your house. Once you’ve got the gutter to length, secure it with hanger brackets every 2 to 3 ft. The hook end of the bracket should be hooked under the front flange of the gutter, while the rest is held in place by screws into your roof’s fascia.

Next, mark the slope of the gutter run on your roof’s fascia (the flat board that supports the gutter). Use a chalk snap line to draw a vertical drop of about 1/4 inch for every 10 feet of run. The slope should be enough to allow water to drain properly.

The ridge of the gutter run should be located near the top of your house, rather than high in the center and low at each end. This helps prevent snow from building up on the roof and pulling your gutters off your house.

At the bottom of your gutter run, locate a downspout outlet that can be attached to the bottom of your gutter. Alternatively, you can locate a downspout elbow at this point. The downspout elbow fits into the outlet tube protruding down from the gutter. The downspout elbow can be fastened to the outlet with pop rivets or sheet-metal screws.

For added safety, a heated cable should be installed in the bottom of your gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dam formation. This is a very common problem in areas that receive frequent winter snowfall, and installing a heated cable can reduce the risk of damage caused by ice dams.

Finish the job by attaching downspout pieces that will turn back to the wall and down to the ground. These downspout pieces have male and female ends, so they slide together before a sheet metal screw secures them to the flange on your gutter. Apply seam sealer to the joint between the downspout and gutter for a waterproof seal.
